Stand in the courts, 50 CE

Jerusalem & the Temple

The Second Temple as the Mishnah describes it, hour by hour, on the three days of Tishrei. Every figure has a source.

What this is

A stylised reconstruction of Herod's Temple Mount and the city around it, at roughly one voxel to two metres, built from Mishnah Middot, Tamid, Yoma, Sukkah and Rosh Hashanah, from Josephus, and from the Herodian archaeology: the Hulda gates, Robinson's and Wilson's arches, the stepped road up from Siloam. The year is 50 CE. Ananias son of Nedebaios is High Priest; Cumanus is procurator.

How to explore

Drag to look round, scroll to come closer. Hover or tap any figure for who they are, what they are doing, and a sourced fact. Click a building's label to read the passage that describes it. The clock runs on its own; drag the timeline to any hour, or press Highlights and let the day carry you.

What it needs

A laptop is best. Phones get the lighter model and still run the whole day. The sound is synthesised, not recorded, and stays off until you press it. Four languages: English, Hebrew, French and Spanish.

Sources

Mishnah Middot, Tamid, Yoma, Sukkah, Rosh Hashanah, Parah and Ta'anit; the Tosefta; Josephus, War 5 and Antiquities 15 and 20; and the excavations of the Herodian platform. Made with three.js, the only WebGL on this site.
