The day
On Rosh Hashanah the Temple offered, beyond the daily Tamid, the festival Musaf: a bull, a ram and seven lambs (Num. 29:1-6), and the shofar was sounded in the Temple flanked by two silver trumpets (Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 3:3). Levites sang Psalm 81 on the fifteen steps of the Nicanor Gate. Pilgrims streamed in through the Hulda Gates and Robinson's stair, bought doves in the Royal Stoa, and Roman soldiers watched the crowds from the roofs of the porticoes and the Antonia.
